Mitosis

Exam-ready definition

Nuclear division that produces two genetically identical daughter cells with the same number of chromosomes as the parent cell. Used for growth, repair of damaged tissue, replacement of cells, and asexual reproduction.

How this is marked

'Genetically identical' is the phrase that pays. Pair it with its uses, growth, repair, replacement, asexual reproduction, because 'state two uses of mitosis' is a recurring 2-marker.

In an exam answer

Asked why a wound heals with identical cells: 'New cells are produced by mitosis, which gives two genetically identical daughter cells for growth and repair.'
